H.L. TOP 2019 #5: The mixture of melodic black metal and classic doom metal is a rather rare combination, but it works very well as it gives a distinct dynamic and swing to the album. The atmosphere is not as dreamy and magical as on "Dagian", my alltime-favourite of the band, but nevertheless are the powerful "black forests of eternal doom" haunting, catchy from the beginning to the end and a mighty candidate for my Top Ten of 2019! Favorite track: Wastelands of Dejection.

Obstacle of Affliction Such an incredible union of black metal and doom, mostly, which is full of intensity and emotion. If you have any interest in either genre, do yourself a favor and discover Old Forest. You will be happy that you did. Favorite track: A Spell upon Thee.

In June 2019, OLD FOREST has released their 5th full-length, "Black forests of eternal doom", via Dusktone

Comprising 6 monstrous extreme metal anthems that bulge with irresistible melodic hooks, bursts of thrilling savagery and moments of spine-tingling dynamic drama, "Black forests of eternal doom", is the result of the huge surge of creativity and a collective desire to keep moving forward with no compromise.

After their 2015 album on Avantgarde Music "Dagian", in 2018, Old Forest began work on whatwas to become their 5th album on Dusktone; Recorded as an ode to the darker thoughts of the solitary mind, this album is equal parts Early 90s Black Metal (Emperor and Dark Throne) and equal parts Epic Doom (in the vein of Candlemass and early Paradise Lost).

6 Tracks of woeful despair, with haunting vocals and dense guitars to pull the soul down into an oubliette of depression and, eventually, suicide. This album should be seen as the depressive alter-ego to it's member's other band In The Woods (Kobold & Kobro).

There are bands that exceed time and fashions and above all that have left an indelible mark since the 90s. One of these is definitely OLD FOREST that since the legendary debut album "Into the Old Forest" (Mordgrimm / Cacophonous Records) have shown what it means to compose qualitative, dark and revolutionary music.

The first 30 seconds of "Revenge by Fire" convinced me to get the whole album! It is a face-melting blend of speed and black metal, reminiscent of Hellripper! KVAEN is a Swedish solo project much like Hellripper but many known guest musicians helped J. Björnfot in his endeavor. Altogether it is really a solid debut album, I loved the melodies and the pace changes in the second half too, ending with a "calm" instrumental one. Well-done!! sachavonkarl74

I'd say Havukruunu is the rightful holder of the Crown and the mantle of Quorthon. Epic choirs, vikingesque themes and tales from the other times, of the Finnish paganism back in the days before our ancestors were brought to the cross and forced to kneel while feeling the bloody sword of saviour on their throats made to kiss the hand of murderers who burnt thousands, tore down our holy places and took our holy days.
