Arrogant Bastard Black metal and synths, not a traditional amalgamation, but Kvalvaag have done a bang-up job.
Occasional synths augment the experience to an almost whimsical level, something I find oddly enticing. That's not to say Seid isn't a blistering rush of savagery, it's still absolutely brimming with blackened elements to make any black metal fan salivate.
Favorite track: Nattegrøde.

whatisthis8175 This was a masterpiece and a half. Amazing artwork, killer atmosphere, and precision instrumentation. The occasional cleans put a neat little bow on a phenomenal album.

H.L. TOP 2018 #8: Normally I keep new albums on my wishlist for a while before I decide to put them into my collection. In case of "Seid" I just waited until the third song! The album is so exuberant that this decision was a no-brainer. The synthesizer sounds are first class, the rough and clean vocals are great and the whole masterpiece spreads a spirit of inspiration and playfulness. For me "Seid" is a must hear for all fans of original and varied black metal! Favorite track: Nattegrøde.

"Seid" is the third studio album of norwegian black metallers KVALVAAG.
It`s more aggressive but at the same time more diverse and unpredictable than our previous albums

The unmistakable style of the Norwegian duo will take you in very cold atmospheres, impetuous rides and clearly epic parts. The atmosphere reminds the previous Malum album, but there is a lot more going on at all times. Haunting atmospheric touches and violent rhythmic elements produce something far bleaker and more unsettling than anything else.

Kvalvaag has this to say about the new album:

"When I started working on the new material, I wanted to surpass our previous work in every way possible. Much more time, effort and better equipment were used compared to our earlier works this time.
We also received financial support from "Norsk fond for utøvende kunstnere" who gave us the ability to give the album the production it deserved.
It was awesome working with Tom Kvalsonic as he is the man behind the sound of many of the albums we grew up with. He completely understood our vision and significantly raised the quality of the album. I feel we have successfully raised the bar as high as possible this time. We had to evolve a lot as musicians to be able to perform our parts during the recording. It has been a educational journey with a lot of hard work and technical challenges in the studio, but I am really satisfied with the end result and our musical progression".

The first 30 seconds of "Revenge by Fire" convinced me to get the whole album! It is a face-melting blend of speed and black metal, reminiscent of Hellripper! KVAEN is a Swedish solo project much like Hellripper but many known guest musicians helped J. Björnfot in his endeavor. Altogether it is really a solid debut album, I loved the melodies and the pace changes in the second half too, ending with a "calm" instrumental one. Well-done!! sachavonkarl74

Gaerea's first release of "Unsettling Whispers" was in 2018, and since, they dared define a "black metal" niche of their own, they dared to walk a new path and stir shit up a bit in the realm of BM, this album is a masterpiece and a milestone proving that it can be done, provided the band can pull it off, and they did, oh they did! Gloomy, dark, post-BM sludgy whatever, it's Gaerea, and this one belongs in my BC collection, the end. sachavonkarl74

Ukrainian Black Metal. To say this is nuts is an understatement! At first you are tempted to dismiss it as noise but then it slowly pulls you in until you are hooked & cannot escape! Of all the mind f*cking albums in my collection this has gotta be one of the mindiest f*ckingest of all... :) Love the cover! Recommended. bmurator
